The Top 10 Best MMORPGs of 2017-2018 You SHOULD Be Playing!
As we’re approaching the end of 2017 I thought it would be a good idea to go ahead and make a personal up to date video featuring what I believe the top MMORPGs are going into 2018.
I’m sure you guys will have quite a varying difference of opinion to what I have and that is perfectly fine. This is, afer all, my own personal list.
Games I believe are the best around currently in 2017.
This list will probably be similar to other videos we’ve done in the past as there are just some games that need to be in this list that have yet to be taken down.
In light of that, I would also like to point out that there very well may be a few games in here that could potentially interest you.
So without beating around the bush, let’s jump right into this..
Secret World Legends
The Secret World has always been a popular MMORPG.
Secret World Legends is an attempt at overhauling the game, making for a compelling, high quality free to play MMORPG that players have been wanting to play for years now.
Despite the game being older than most in this list, the fact is that it is nevertheless one of the best MMORPGs available currently.
Not only does it look and play great but it also has more story and voice acting than most MMORPGs released these days, not to mention the quality of voice acting given and story told.
And it’s free to boot. Which is always a bonus for those of you unable to afford a subscription fee.
Blade and Soul
A personal favorite of Stix’s and – quite a large amount of our following of lovely viewers – Blade and Soul is one of the most populated free to play MMORPGs available in 2017.
Showcasing some of the best action combat in an MMORPG – let alone some of the best graphics in an MMORPG – Blade and Soul absolutely destroys the vast majority of free to play titles.
Its playerbase is high – especially in comparison to literally every other free to play title, and it received regular updates that keep players playing.
Granted its cheesy voice acting is pretty terrible, the story in Blade and Soul easily make up for what you no doubt have to grit your teeth through.
Which isn’t a bad thing – it’s actually somewhat hilarious, honestly.
Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood
One of the only pay to play MMORPG left, Final Fantasy XIV recently released their new expansion Stormblood; overhauling features, classes, and adding on to the already amazing quality game.
The fact that Final Fantasy XIV is one of the only pay to play MMORPGs left should tell you something about the quality it always delivers on – voice acting, storyline, content.
Filled with content updates every few months, it is one of the only MMORPGs around that has an ever increasing amount of activities to partake in.
Granted it does have some complaints, such as its slow progression initially and the combat having global cooldowns that drive casual gamers mad, the fact is that outside of its few flaws it’s one of the only MMORPG worth investing time into.
Add on to this that it is by far the second highest populated MMORPG, following World of Warcraft. Seriously, no joke, it is the only MMORPG currently that even comes remotely close to rivaling World of Warcraft.
The Elder Scrolls Online
One of the few buy to play MMORPG left on the market, The Elder Scrolls Online is one of the most freeing MMORPGs available currently.
Featuring one of the most unique class systems, 100% full voice acting just like any traditional Elder Scrolls game, and a huge open world, it’s no wonder The Elder Scrolls Online is the third largest MMORPG presently.
However it does lack in the same areas such as combat and graphics, but that doesn’t detract from the overall game. Not in the least.
The Elder Scrolls Online is incredibly well polished, one of the most polished MMORPGs in this list if I were to be honest with you.
It has all the makings of a truly great MMORPG and its large playerbase, even though it is a buy to play game shows exactly why it is still as such.
TERA
Even though technically TERA is in a slow decline, it doesn’t detract from the fact that it is one of the truly great free to play MMORPG titles out there.
Released initially as a pay to play title, TERA relaunched under a free to play model – to great success, at that.
It went on to become one of the most played free to play MMORPGs for years until being dethroned by Blade and Soul.
While in no way inferior to Blade and Soul – each being better than the other in different areas, the fact is that TERA just isn’t capable of keeping up with other titles in the MMORPG niche.
But this doesn’t mean TERA is a bad or inferior game at all. Quite the opposite! It is still, to this day, one of the better MMORPGs out there.
Unfortunately, people have either played through enough of it or just don’t really care for it anymore due to its age.
Guild Wars 2
Naturally with some of the other MMORPGs in this list, Guild Wars 2 would find its way in here.
Released initially as a buy to play MMORPG, Guild Wars 2 proceeded to – like other MMORPGs before it – adopt a free to play model.
Which was a good route to take, as it enabled Guild Wars 2 to soar to new heights that its buy to play model was limiting it to.
One of the higher quality games out there, Guild Wars 2 offers a very detailed story, world, and class system that is almost unrivaled – albeit in maybe 2 other MMORPGs. If that.
Adding on to all of this is the fact that Guild Wars 2 is one of the most populated MMORPGs out there – easily having one of the five largest communities in an MMORPG.
Additionally, Guild Wars 2 has one of the nicest communities I’ve ever had the pleasure of dealing with. People around every corner willing to help each other out and work together to accomplish your goals.
Soul Worker Online
With Soul Worker Online’s official English launch in the near future, I figured what better time than to list this Anime MMORPG now?
It is something both Stix and I have played quite a extensively, even though the two of us have hit a slight snag of sorts with having to grind dailies to progress..
But, I digress.
Soul Worker is by far the most entertaining Anime inspired MMORPG I’ve had the pleasure of playing.
Not only does it look absolutely amazing graphically, as the design is just.. perfect, but the gameplay offers some of the most entertaining action combat in an action MMORPG.
I’m sure most people might argue that either BDO or Blade and Soul have the best action combat, and that may be more or less true for everyone that believes as such, however don’t count Soul Worker out.
Although not your typical MMORPG due to its actual genre in the MMORPG category, it is in fact the most polished.
Not only does it play better than others in its category such as Vindictus and Kritika, but it is also far more populated than both. And population is key to a healthy game!
Phantasy Star Online 2
Similar to Soul Worker, but at the same time.. not really too similar, comes Phantasy Star Online 2.
An MMORPG that is.. probably one of the most sought after and worthy of coming to the West, yet is repeatedly delayed ever so often as Sega apparently doesn’t know their target audience very well.
Regardless, Phantasy Star Online 2 has never graced our Western shores, and may very well never..
But! That does not in any way change the fact that the game itself is truly worthy of having the title of the best free to play Japanese MMORPG.
PSO2’s Anime designs are almost on par with Soul Worker’s, and it has the best Anime character creator in existance.
Not only that, but it has an extensive class and skill system along with some very, very fun gameplay.. even if slightly dated combat keeps us from enjoying it fully.
Nevertheless, Phantasy Star Online 2 offers some of the greatest, largest scale battles I’ve ever witnessed in any MMO ever. Not just MMORPG, but MMO. As in the entire MMO genre. The battles in this game are that insane.
Monster Hunter Online
From the several hundred MMORPGs I’ve played over the last year, I can safely say I have never played an MMORPG like Monster Hunter in the past.
It is by far the most unique MMORPG I have ever had the experience of playing.
I mean, in theory it plays not too differently to Soul Worker, Phantasy Star, Vindictus and the like but at the same time, where they are dungeon crawler MMOs, Monster Hunter is a.. Monster.. Hunting.. MMO.
As in, the goal of everything is to jump right into an instance and go hunting for monsters.
I know, I know, it doesn’t really *seem* all that different. Very valid point, and you would be correct in assuming it isn’t as it’s not. It plays similarly to the aforementioned games but stands on its own in different areas.
Not only does Monster Hunter Online utilize some of the best looking character models in JMMORPGs, but the combat is right out of the mainstream Monster Hunter series’.
This makes for a very well playing game that plays just like a traditional Monster Hunter game, with added online functionality turning it into an MMO.
World of Warcraft
No “Best MMORPG” list would be complete without the reigning king, World of Warcraft, right?
Regardless of which side of the fence you‘re on – either loving or hating the game, the fact remains that in terms of MMORPGs – not MMOs in general – There is no larger, or more populated MMORPG than World of Warcraft.
It has been the largest MMORPG on the market for so many years and continues to be even a decade after its initial release.
It has some of the most extensive lore, some of the most in-depth storytelling and some of the best written characters in MMO history.
If you haven’t had the opportnity to play through World of Warcraft by now then you‘re truly missing out on something great.
Although many older players of the game believe that in its current rendition, it is a far stretch to even refer to as World of Warcraft, the fact is that like many games, it evolved and changed into something different.
Having played the game since Wrath of the Lich King myself all the way back in 2008, I have seen the game go through its fair share of changes and still believe it is one of the best MMORPGs going into 2018.
