Revue Starlight Re LIVE is Actually Very Cute.
Don’t ask me why I decided to play this. Let’s just say that I was Googling “cute Anime girl mobile games” so I could play a game with cute Anime waifu’s. And that’s pretty much what I got with this.
Unfortunately I actually had absolutely no idea there was an Anime adaptation of this prior to downloading it, but that’s okay. Supposedly this game, Revue Starlight Re LIVE takes place directly after the events of the Anime leave off.
Since I never watched the Anime, once again, I had no idea who anyone was, what the premise of the game was but there were apparently cute schoolgirls that were doing battle as part of.. like, drama club? I think?
The game takes place in the Seisho Music Academy, and follows a selection of adorable girls – all of whom are actually voiced by the very same voice actors from the Anime. That’s pretty cool.
While the story seems pretty developed already, and there’s plenty of adorable interactions, story to sit through and characters to recruit, the game also has a fairly deep combat system and yes – there’s an auto-play option, however, I never opted to enable it.
Because if you know me, you’ll know I despise auto-elements in my games. You can field several characters simultaneously, each having their own affinities, abilities and personal backstories.
I didn’t make it too far through but I never actually saw varied enemies – just more of the same for the duration of what I played.
I’m sure this changes the further you go through the game, and I’m sure the combat gets much more intuitive the deeper you get into the game but honestly, it seemed a little unusual to have the game progress through mission-based battles, having the odd story-cutscene every few chapters.
Since you’re part of a musical academy, you can bet there’s music involved. Even during battle, there’s an Anime track that plays every time I activate my “Climax” mode. And yes, it’s really called “Climax” mode, I’m not making that up. I wish I was.
Graphically, the game is about as adorable as the characters personalities are. You have a beautiful 3D graphical style, lots of unique animations, there are tons of songs from the Anime that were brought over to the game and – honestly, it’s a cute, lighthearted adaptation.
Honestly, I’m more a fan of deep, thought-provoking RPG games so this isn’t necessarily my style of game. But that doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy myself. Quite the contrary.
I did enjoy what I played, I just can’t see myself dedicating enough time to it to really play it through enough to hit the end of the game.
But I’m sure plenty of you will, especially if you enjoyed the Anime.
The only issue I’ve seen is that people complain about the terrible gacha system in place and the garbage rates. Make of that what you will!
