Knights Chronicle is a Very Generic RPG
“A Stunning New RPG” “Become a Strategic Genius” “Totally Original Storyline”
Those are 3 phrases used to describe Knights Chronicle and honestly.. ehhh.
So upon entering the game we’re greeted by a 1-2 minute Anime opening which was pretty cool.
Then we’re greeted by a creation of the Goddess called Lena, who tells us we’re a “spirit” and as such are unable to interact with the world or anyone within it and are essentially here to merely watch events develop. Yup, that sounds depressing.
Shortly after we meet Theo and Leona, two of the main cast of characters. Theo’s your typical emo boy main character who lost his parents when he was younger. Everyone in the village blames him for their death or something.
And thus begins our story.
The game plays much like the majority of Mobile RPGs. There’s an overworld with various different areas, which each area having a number of Chapter’s to progress through.
These areas aren’t explorable, instead acting as more of a back-drop for scenes and battles. Honestly I’ve always been more partial to having the freedom to explore the areas that the game offers but that’s just me.
Each Chapter functions more or less as a 2-3 stage battle having you take your party of up to 5 characters into combat, most of the time against trash mobs. Then every couple Chapters you’re given a more powerful boss monster to engage, and every so often the game elaborates more on the story.
The game, the story and the gameplay itself is all incredibly linear. The combat is turn-based, meaning that your characters and enemies take turns attacking.
I didn’t fully grasp how priority was distributed in battle as even after leveling my heroes up to level 40, the level 5 monsters would still occasionally get to have their move first.
Nevertheless, at least the special effects were a lot of fun to watch. The combat itself and the character models used within combat, and even within the game itself outside of portraits were decent enough but I’ve seen a lot better.
I was actually a little disappointed considering this is a newer game and has over 100,000 ratings of 4* or above.
Regardless, after playing for a little while the game felt okay.
It was nothing special by any means, and at the end of the day this is a Gacha game so you can bet you’re going to waste a lot of time or a lot of money grinding for heroes to use.
I did enjoy that the game allowed for me to skip tutorials though as that’s a pretty solid enjoyment-killer for me. I’ve played enough Mobile RPGs and MMOs to know exactly what every feature does. I don’t need hand-holding and there should be a tutorial-skip present.
After skipping the tutorials I feel as though I didn’t miss anything – I knew how to recruit new heroes, how to upgrade, how to level up, how to evolve.
There’s plenty to do, and the story is actually pretty solid from what I read but again – it’s just nothing really different or special.
