Gaia Odyssey - 2020 First Impressions and Thoughts
I.. I don’t know what I was thinking going into this game. I saw it was recommended as a game that shared similarities to Genshin Impact and.. admittedly.. it did not. As should be evident 20 seconds into this video.
So, surprisingly you begin the game by selecting your class. You have 3 unique classes to choose from: Berserker, Lancer and Cannoneer. Each class is gender locked, with the Berserker and Lancer both being males and the Cannoneer being a female. Why can’t we ever get a female Berserker?
Anyway, since there was only a single female class with the fourth class being locked, I opted to go Cannoneer. This was a good choice as I had massive AoE abilities that could absolutely destroy my enemies.
After selecting your class, you’re thrown directly into the game and begin auto-pathing to your quest target.
Every time you talk to an NPC you obtain a level up, with the rate of levelling being almost incomparable to any other game I’ve ever played. I’m not gonna lie.. I played this game for about 15 minutes and then stopped as I’d almost hit level 50, and that was so absurd I couldn’t continue any further.
I’m not sure what the level cap is in the game but the fact that you level so rapidly killed any kind of enjoyment I might have gotten out of the game.
I’d like to say the game had some good combat but.. I auto-attacked everything and 1-shot every monster I fought. There was no challenge at all and there was no point really in even paying any attention to the game.
All the interaction that was required of me was my clicking of the “complete quest” button as we have yet to implement the ability to complete quests without our input.
Graphically, the game didn’t look bad. Characters were small, scenery was kinda cute. It was nothing special but at the same time if the combat were better and there was more to the game as a whole I feel as though it would’ve been perfectly fine to play through.
Admittedly the animations were a little basic and skill abilities weren’t really all too flashy but again, not something that is really detrimental to my overall enjoyment of the game.
My main concern was merely the fact that I leveled so rapidly – almost level 50 in 15 minutes. That is an atrocious leveling speed. I would’ve gotten past level 100 in less than an hour at that rate.
Overall I think this is one of the worst mobile games I’ve played. Again not graphically, but.. just all ’round, as a whole.
I know some people probably enjoy the game but this just isn’t for me. I require some type of interaction – and I don’t want levels to exist solely as a number, it makes leveling pointless.
